Synopsis

A Singular Life," the 1895 novel by Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, tells the inspiring yet tragic story of Leonard Drott, a bold and idealistic young minister who advocates for Christian socialism and moral reform, dedicating himself to the most destitute members of society; set in the impoverished dockside neighbourhoods of Boston, Drott leads an audacious life by rejecting conventional church dogma and actively ministering to the struggling labourers, fishermen, and alcoholics; the narrative chronicles the enormous difficulties he faces from societal prejudice and established religious authorities, examining the power of one man's dedicated life of sacrifice and devotion as he attempts to radically enact the principles of Christ in the pursuit of social justice in late 19th-century America.
