Fantasy
Synopsis
Written by Matilde Serao and first published in 1880, "Fantasy" invites the reader into the work of one of Italy's most prominent imaginative writers of the late 19th century. The story centers on the intense, distorted friendship between the spiritually profound and mystical Lucia Altimare and the sensible, placid Caterina Spaccapietra. Beginning in a boarding school setting and extending into the complexities of married life, the novel explores the impact of Lucia's destructive "fantasies" on the lives around her, specifically through a tragic love triangle involving her husband and her best friend's spouse. Presented with an introduction by Edmund Gosse, the work showcases Serao's literary power, described as an idealist working in the school of naturalism, and her acute observation of Southern Italian society, creating a potent psychological drama of passion, betrayal, and sacrifice.
