İçimizdeki Şeytan
Synopsis
Sabahattin Ali's novel, İçimizdeki Şeytan (The Devil Inside Us), offers a profound examination of the conflicted intellectual caught between ideals and reality, will and instinct, through the tragic love story of Ömer and Macide. Set against the cosmopolitan and bohemian backdrop of Istanbul, the narrative delves into the psyche of Ömer, an aspiring thinker constantly grappling with life's trivialities and personal weaknesses—an inertia and indecisiveness he attributes to "the devil inside him." While Ömer's lofty dreams clash dramatically with practical realities and financial hardship, the innocent, honest, and steadfast Macide navigates this paradoxical world, witnessing her husband's internal struggles while fighting for her own existence. The novel masterfully explores themes of personal morality, the suffocating influence of social circles, and the individual's helplessness against societal pressures.
