Tanzimat’tan Cumhuriyet’e İstanbul’da Osmanlı Anıtları
Keywords:
Ottoman Monuments, Public Sculpture, Urban ImageSynopsis
Authored by Nihal Konar Naş Karsan, this book examines Ottoman monuments and designs in Istanbul from the declaration of the Tanzimat Edict (1839) to the establishment of the Republic (1923). The work argues that monumental sculpture in Turkey did not begin solely with the Republic but existed in urban spaces from the mid-19th century as part of the modernization process. The study analyzes existing structures such as the Muscovite Stone, Hadika Stone, Monument of Liberty, and Aviation Martyrs' Monument, as well as unrealized projects like the Symbol of Justice and the Tanzimat Monument. The author scrutinizes how these monuments were used not merely as artistic objects, but as tools reflecting the political ideology of the era, functioning to convey messages in the public sphere and shaping collective memory. The work traces the visual imprints of Westernization efforts in the urban texture of the late Ottoman period.
