Synopsis

Sosyal Boyutlarıyla Sağlık Çalışmaları (Health Studies with its Social Dimensions), edited by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Selay Giray Yakut and published by Holistence Publications, addresses current and critical issues in the health sector from a multidisciplinary perspective. The book primarily consists of revised papers presented at the International Multidisciplinary Approaches to Disadvantaged Groups Symposium and the International Health Conference with its Different Dimensions. The work centres on the pressure exerted by the COVID-19 pandemic on global health systems, thoroughly examining the ethical dilemmas of rationing medical care (patient selection) in resource-scarce settings. While healthcare workers are described as the "hidden heroes" of this challenging process, the serious problems they face are also extensively covered. In this context, the increasing phenomenon of violence against healthcare workers is analysed in terms of its types, causes, and solutions. Concurrently, the relationships between negative institutional attitudes observed among health professionals—such as organisational cynicism, work alienation, and turnover intention—are investigated in detail. The book is grounded in the concept of "social justice" in health services, focusing on the challenges faced by disadvantaged groups. It explores vital topics such as the cultural barriers LGBT individuals face in accessing healthcare due to stigma, discrimination, and social isolation; how "ageism" has been portrayed in the media during the pandemic; and the therapeutic effects of art therapy (ceramics classes) for individuals with disabilities. This volume is an essential resource for those working in health sociology, ethics, and public policy.
