Bellek Oluşturmada Seramiğin Çağdaş Sanata Katkısı by Yasemin Tanrıverdi is an in-depth study that examines the conceptual power of ceramics, one of art's most ancient materials, through the theme of memory in contemporary art. This work, prepared as a Proficiency in Art Thesis, treats memory not merely as a multi-layered repository of the past, but as a fundamental function that ensures the continuity of individual and collective identity. The book analyses the deep overlap between ceramics and memory at the intersection of different disciplines such as psychology, sociology, philosophy, and archaeology. After establishing how ceramics have historically served as carriers of memory (from archaeological findings to clay tablets), the work shifts its focus to contemporary art practices. In this context, it examines how artists use ceramics as a medium of expression along the axes of "repetition-imitation," "culture," and "time-space". Through concrete examples—from Marcel Duchamp's "Fountain" and Judy Chicago's "The Dinner Party" to Ai Weiwei's "Sunflower Seeds" and works by Louise Bourgeois, Yoko Ono, and Sarkis —the book reveals the contribution of ceramics to memory formation in contemporary art, both through its own material memory and as a conceptual vehicle.
